Use and Trip Economics

What Does a Fishing, Watersports, or Family Day Actually Cost?

Split fixed ownership allocation from per-day trip costs for a specific activity, then see the real cost per day and per participant.

Not every boating day costs the same, and blending them hides that

A fishing trip's bait and fuel, a watersports day's tow-sports gear, and a family outing's simpler costs are genuinely different, but a single blended cost-per-use-day figure averages them together. This engine isolates one activity at a time, its own share of fixed ownership cost plus its own trip-level costs, so the comparison is honest instead of blended.

How this is calculated

Fixed allocation adds the ownership cost you assign to this activity plus any allocated trailer cost. Variable cost per day adds activity fuel, launch fee, and other trip costs, minus any contributions from others. Total annual cost is the fixed allocation plus the variable cost per day times activity days; dividing by days gives cost per day, and dividing that by participants gives cost per participant.

Worked example

$1,000 of annual ownership cost allocated to fishing, with no other costs entered and 10 fishing days a year, comes to exactly $100 a day. Add $30 in fuel and a $10 launch fee per trip and the total annual cost rises to $1,400, or $140 a day; split across 2 participants, that's $70 each.

Common mistakes

Allocating 100% of annual ownership cost to a single activity when the boat is used for several overstates that activity's true cost; split the allocation by actual use share instead. The other mistake is treating cost per day as a verdict on whether the activity is worth it, that's a personal judgment this tool doesn't make for you.

Frequently asked questions

Does this say fishing is "worth" more than a family day?

No. This allocates cost, it never values the recreation itself. A higher cost-per-day for one activity just reflects your own inputs (more fuel, more gear, fewer days), not a judgment about which activity is more worthwhile.

How do I split ownership cost between activities if I do more than one?

You choose the allocation method and should be able to see it. A simple approach is splitting your annual ownership cost by the share of days each activity represents; run this engine once per activity with that share of the annual allocation.

Should I include personal gear like rods or wakeboards?

Only if you want to. Personal gear is excluded from this calculation by default; add it to "other trip cost per day" if you want it counted as part of the activity's cost.

How is this different from Boat Cost per Use Day?

That engine spreads your total ownership cost across every use day, regardless of activity. This one focuses on one specific activity and adds its own trip-level costs (fuel, launch, gear) plus a per-participant split.
